Have faced the pain inside them
Of when a lover comes between
A family divided

But never has another lover
Ever caused such violence
Gather sisters, brothers
For the tale of Carolina

Carolina had no mother
So her brother raised her
Like a father, till one summer
He became a soldier

He swore he'd murder any lover
Of his only sister
And when he swore, he went off to war
To kill the other colors

Everybody stayed away
From Carolina, when in town
Except for one:
The lonely Jenny Brown

The miner's daughter Jenny was
And evil was her father
So Jenny prayed most every day
She'd one day find a savior

And one day Jenny's
Wishing, sitting, fishing by the river
And in a daze she cast her gaze
On the bathing Carolina

And as she stared that Jenny dared
To up and go approach her
And Carolina looked away and bathed
But didn't diss her

And Carolina held her breath
As gently Jenny kissed her
And a soldier's sister fell in love
With the daughter of a miner

Jenny said 'there'll be no hand-me downs'
'Even when I see him coming round'

But bliss's kiss was armistice
And oh, the war was over
Across the land came home the bands
Of all those ragged soldiers

And one day Dun, the butcher's son
Comes up to her and told her
Oh Carolina, run and hide
I spied upon horizon over yonder

Comes a rider, Carolina
From the highlands, Carolina
Stand beside her, Carolina

Hell-fire raising, guns-a-blazing
Carolina's brother
And Jenny's father came to lay to waste
His daughter's lover

But Shotgun Jenny came to play
She cocked her gun and fired
And on that day, four bodies lay
Twas two that loved, a soldier and a miner
